According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7065283\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the \u201cvast majority\u201d of people undergoing prostatectomy, in which all or part of the prostate gland is removed, experience permanent retrograde ejaculation. This is due to destruction of the natural mechanisms preventing backflow of the ejaculate into the bladder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications used to treat prostate enlargement, high blood pressure, and depression may cause retrograde ejaculation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As indicated in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2213889\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2007 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alpha blockers used to treat high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) have been linked to retrograde ejaculation. This includes the alpha blocker tamsulosin, sold as Flomax. Some say retrograde ejaculation feels like a \u201cnormal orgasm,\u201d while others find the experience \u201cunnerving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is retrograde ejaculation diagnosed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though retrograde ejaculation is not harmful or painful, you should see a doctor to ensure that the condition is not being caused by an underlying issue that requires medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A doctor will first ask you a number of questions about your symptoms and then physically examine your genitals. This includes testicular sperm extraction, non-surgical sperm retrieval, and even certain medications that may improve muscle tone in the bladder and help you ejaculate normally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sperm retrieval<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bacandrology.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12610-015-0021-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to retrieve sperm directly from the post-ejaculate urinalysis. The sperm can then be used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/future-fertility-treatments\/\">fertility treatments<\/a>. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7286273\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that retrograde ejaculation can reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/sperm-quality\/\">sperm motility<\/a> and velocity, due to acidification from the urine, when sperm is retrieved from the bladder. Therefore, some doctors use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/sc198973.pdf?origin=ppub#:~:text=Because%20many%20SCI%20males%20have,of%20urine%20on%20sperm%20motility.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">techniques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like injecting a pH-buffered solution into the bladder beforehand to lessen the impact on sperm health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surgical sperm retrieval<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both testicular sperm extraction (TESE) and testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) involve surgically retrieving sperm from the testicles. This is achieved with a nerve block, which \u201cturns off\u201d pain signals to the brain while sperm is extracted via a small cut or a needle puncture in the testes. Retrieved sperm can be used fresh or frozen for later insemination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3719314\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/givelegacy.com\/guide-to-sperm-freezing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cryopreservation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of testicular sperm tissues was considered to be \u201cmore suitable and of great benefit\u201d when used in IVF cycles. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20626161\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2010 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicated that ICSI with frozen-thawed micro-amount sperm obtained by TESA is also a safe, economic, and effective method for the treatment of infertility due to azoospermia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication may be an option for those who do not have permanent physical changes to their anatomy (such as after surgery). Medications used to treat retrograde ejaculation \u2014 most prescribed off-label \u2014 include imipramine (Tofranil), midodrine, chlorpheniramine, ephedrine, and brompheniramine. These medications aim to keep the bladder neck muscle closed during ejaculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, on the other hand, the retrograde ejaculation is caused by a medication, the patient may want to temporarily pause their use of the medication, if they can do so safely, or explore other options for sperm retrieval.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retrograde ejaculation is not harmful, but it can negatively affect fertility.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While retrograde ejaculation may not be harmful or painful, it can be an issue when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/mens-guide-to-trying-to-conceive\/\">trying to conceive<\/a>.
