It regulates the intricate machinery of everything that drives \u201chomeostasis,\u201d or equilibrium within your body\u2014from heart rate to hormone secretion and metabolism to motivation for activity. Plus, of course, the need to sleep and the nudge to wake up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your sleep-wake cycle is an integral part of your body&#8217;s balance. Mess with that cycle? You mess with everything, including your fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7312974\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A literature review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released in June 2020 underpins this idea. Researchers explored findings surrounding fertility and circadian rhythms in both human and animal models, finding that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">circadian timing is generated at the cellular level,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encoded proteins determine the unique rhythm of each human or animal, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interruptions in this natural cycle affect fertility in both human and animal models.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s look at a few key studies that could further unlock our understanding of the connection between sleep and fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sleep-sperm-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep and sperm health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28412762\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomized controlled trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2017 looked at 981 healthy men to determine what connection sleep deprivation had, if any, on the health and quality of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/what-is-sperm\/\">sperm<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The groups were divided based on two factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bed times<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group A: 8\u201310PM<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group B: 10PM\u2013midnight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group C: after midnight<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep duration<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group 1 (short): 6 hours or fewer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group 2 (average): 7\u20138 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group 3 (long): 9 hours or more<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study looked at semen parameters\u2014the count, motility (movement), and morphology (shape) of sperm\u2014as well as the presence of antisperm antibodies (ASA). Antisperm antibodies are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system cells that mistakenly identify sperm as harmful invaders and attempt to eliminate them, contributing to infertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, researchers found that short <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> long sleep durations, as well as late bedtimes, correlated with poor sperm health in terms of motility, survival rate, and even count. A significant increase in ASA production was found in short sleepers, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dovepress.com\/association-between-sleep-quality-and-semen-parameters-and-reproductiv-peer-reviewed-article-NSS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 970 patients saw similar results. In this research, patients delivered a semen sample along with a lifestyle questionnaire. Researchers examined sleep quality in relation to sperm count and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/sperm-quality\/\">sperm quality<\/a>. They found that there was a marked difference in certain semen parameters for the group with poor quality sleep, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower total motility and progressive motility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower sperm count<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poorer sperm morphology<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The bottom line: While sleep deprivation can wreck your overall sperm quality, sleeping for too long may <\/b><b><i>also<\/i><\/b><b> decrease sperm health. Sleep quality is the most important factor\u2014getting 7\u20138 hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep is key.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sleep-inflammation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep and inflammation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2016 study of 50 college students explored the relationship between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26354106\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep and the presence of inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They looked at the duration of sleep, sleep quality, sleep latency (the length of time it takes to go from awake to sleeping), and bedtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that each of the sleep measures below had a strong correlation with the presence of inflammation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short sleep duration (less than 6 hours)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late bedtime (after 12am)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor quality sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disturbed sleep latency<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does this connect to fertility? We know that inflammation can affect sperm production. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4508350\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reviewed evidence connecting the presence of higher-than-normal cytokines\u2014immune substances that promote inflammation\u2014to impaired sperm function. The review also highlighted that many infertile men experience acute or chronic inflammation of the genitourinary tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But wouldn&#8217;t you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you had inflammation? Not necessarily. The study found that many of these men had no outward symptoms. And this insidious inflammation affected both fertility and the outcome of assisted reproductive technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The bottom line: Inflammation seems to affect your sperm production. A number of factors could cause it, but one you can control is when you go to bed and the length and quality of your sleep.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sleep-fertility-hormones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep and male fertility hormones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormones and fertility go hand in hand, as the process of producing sperm is driven by the delicate balance of several reproductive hormones:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luteinizing hormone (LH)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep deprivation can upset that balance. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4445839\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2011 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 10 college-age men examined<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the relationship between sleep deprivation and testosterone levels, and found that, on days following 5-hour sleep sessions, testosterone levels were noticeably lower\u2014by 10\u201315% than after night when subjects were able to be fully rested. Daytime testosterone levels were decreased by 10% to 15% for the subjects who underwent a week of sleep deprivation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pattern holds for older men, too. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17520786\/\">2007 study<\/a> found that, for men ages 64\u201374, the amount of sleep they got the night before had a significant correlation with their morning testosterone levels. This is especially important for older men, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/newsletter_article\/testosterone_aging_and_the_mind\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who have lower average testosterone levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The bottom line: Sleep deprivation likely affects your hormone levels, and low testosterone is associated with more than just infertility\u2014it <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/labblog.uofmhealth.org\/body-work\/low-total-testosterone-men-widespread-linked-to-chronic-disease\"><b>affects<\/b><\/a><b> sexual health, obesity and muscle mass, heart health, and even morbidity.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"melatonin-fertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin and male fertility<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, you&#8217;re convinced. If you\u2019re trying to find ways to improve your sleep, you may have heard of melatonin, a sleep aid designed to knock you out, but \u201cnaturally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not so fast. It\u2019s important to remember that melatonin is a hormone, not an herb\u2014and it may have more widespread impacts on your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12065466\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted back in 2002<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a correlation between long-term melatonin use and a decrease in semen quality. Researchers examined the effects of a 3mg supplement of melatonin on semen quality over a six-month period. They found that long-term melatonin use decreased sperm concentration and motility in 25% of subjects. For one man, this effect did not reverse, even after the treatment period was over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The results? There is no quick fix for quality sleep. This is something you\u2019ll have to work on as part of a holistic lifestyle change.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"healthy-sleep-habits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building healthy sleep habits<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on what we know about circadian rhythm and the human body, good quality sleep and male fertility go hand in hand. Legacy recommends between six and nine hours of sleep a night, especially if you\u2019re currently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7181488\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undergoing fertility treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some suggestions to improve your sleep quality:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get the proper exercise and movement during the day (this may also help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/givelegacy.com\/sperm-improvement-guide\/#exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve your sperm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alleviate stress as much as you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a healthful diet (also thought to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/givelegacy.com\/sperm-improvement-guide\/#diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve sperm quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove light from your bedroom during sleep and 30 minutes before bedtime, including and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your phone or tablet (which emit blue light that may disrupt circadian rhythms).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a bedtime routine that will get your mind ready for sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay on schedule\u2014no all-nighters or trying to \u201ccatch up\u201d on weekends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep is one factor of many in the picture of your overall reproductive health.
