{"id":15249,"date":"2021-03-22T09:00:50","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T09:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/givelegacy.com\/?post_type=resource&#038;p=2196"},"modified":"2023-06-14T13:44:35","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T13:44:35","slug":"do-men-get-periods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/resources\/do-men-get-periods\/","title":{"rendered":"Do (cis) men get periods?"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all heard the jokes about \u201cman periods\u201d and \u201cmale PMS.\u201d Cringeworthy one-liners aside, do people with testes really have monthly hormone fluctuations? And if yes, do those fluctuations lead to the same changes in mood people attribute to PMS?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s cut through the clutter. The answer is complicated, and not definitive. Let\u2019s take a look at what\u2019s really happening and what science says about those hormones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male monthly hormone fluctuations?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without a uterus, you don\u2019t get a period. Period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201cperiod\u201d usually refers to the monthly shedding of lining the uterus built up in preparation for a potential pregnancy. That shedding comes along with a hormonal shift, as estrogen levels drop. Hormones and moods go hand in hand, which explains why mood swings are part of the premenstrual symptoms (PMS) some people get in the week before their period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But do people with testes have the same hormone fluctuations, and the associated mood swings, without the actual period? Jed Diamond, Ph.D., thinks so. He coined the term \u201cIrritable Male Syndrome\u201d in his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publish.csiro.au\/RD\/RD01077\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2002 book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the same name. Diamond looked at the biological behavior of male rams, who demonstrated changes in behavior as their hormonal composition changed. Diamond identified four potential triggers for his condition:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluctuating testosterone levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biochemical imbalances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of masculine identity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a compelling model with one major issue\u2014humans aren\u2019t rams. There\u2019s no objective evidence that humans experience this fluctuation, and its subsequent behavior changes, in the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male hormones: It\u2019s complicated<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s actually no evidence at all that testosterone levels change in a cyclical way, like estrogen and progesterone levels do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do know that testosterone fluctuates slightly throughout the day. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/94\/3\/907\/2596608\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2009 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> observed 66 men between the ages of 30 and 80, taking blood samples at 6 different visits in the morning and evening. The results suggested that the body does experience testosterone fluctuations.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In younger men (30\u201340 years old), testosterone levels were 20\u201325% lower in the afternoon than in the morning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In older men, this difference lessened, with a 10% difference observed in 70-year-olds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does testosterone affect mood?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does that mean for mood swings? Evidence that testosterone levels actively affect mood and emotion is mixed.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnins.2015.00012\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined the connection between testosterone and brain function. Although the authors acknowledged that animal studies suggested a connection, fMRI results from their experiment could only confirm a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correlation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between testosterone levels and behavior and brain function, not proof of causation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4418274\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found evidence of a correlation between depressive symptoms and low serum testosterone levels in men between the ages of 21 and 41. However, this could be limited to at-risk males.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1506119\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the impact of administering testosterone to increase levels in a group of men aged 65 or older. The researchers noted an increase in sexual desire and erectile function, with some improvement in mood, compared to the placebo group.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/european-psychiatry\/article\/no-relationship-between-testosterone-levels-and-depressive-symptoms-in-aging-men\/75A44D14BB8FD4B71D921FC70EDD6E50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at serum testosterone levels and depression symptoms, and found no correlation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And round and round the studies go. What we can glean from these conflicting results is the difficulty that researchers have measuring and defining emotional or mood changes, and the subtle ways biology plays a role in not just our moods but potentially our entire personalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else does testosterone do?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/understanding-how-testosterone-affects-men#:~:text=Testosterone%20is%20a%20sex%20hormone,estradiol,%20a%20form%20of%20estrogen.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plays a significant role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in biological functions. Researchers believe it affects things like libido, bone mass, strength, energy levels, and the production of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/what-is-sperm\/\">sperm<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal testosterone can vary wildly between individuals, and we\u2019re just beginning to understand the effects of supplementation, and when supplementation may be necessary. Anecdotal evidence suggests that men receiving testosterone supplementation feel less anxiety and have greater sex drive and energy levels, but to date, studies aren\u2019t clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/drugs-and-medications\/testosterone--what-it-does-and-doesnt-do\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect sperm count, and potentially cause other physical symptoms like headaches and insomnia. Testosterone replacement therapy, or TRT, is known to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reproductivefacts.org\/news-and-publications\/patient-fact-sheets-and-booklets\/documents\/fact-sheets-and-info-booklets\/testosterone-use-and-male-infertility\/#:~:text=One%20side%20effect%20of%20testosterone,by%20testosterone%20treatment%20is%20reversible.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impact fertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a significant way\u2014an effect that may be temporary or, for some men, permanent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What impacts testosterone levels?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in testosterone levels happen for a number of reasons. The biggest one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2544367\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is aging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As men get older, they\u2019re more likely to experience testosterone deficiency. We\u2019re not entirely sure why this happens, but it\u2019s normal\u2014and again, \u201cnormal\u201d testosterone levels vary from person to person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another factor is obesity. People who are overweight may have lower testosterone levels, and&nbsp; some of the scientific literature actually demonstrates a positive correlation between testosterone supplementation and shedding those pounds. It may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3955331\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a self-perpetuating cycle, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with lower testosterone feeding weight gain and weight gain further suppressing testosterone, but further study is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking, something highly detrimental to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/sperm-quality\/\">sperm count and quality<\/a>, can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> testosterone levels. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17163954\/#:~:text=Smoking%20men%20had%2015%25%20higher,could%20possibly%20mask%20borderline%20hypogonadism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study of over 3400<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> men found that smokers had 13% higher free testosterone and 15% overall more testosterone than men who never smoked. This is definitely not an argument to take up smoking; although it may result in higher testosterone, it\u2019s also one of the most detrimental habits for your sperm.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Learn more about <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/givelegacy.com\/resources\/the-negative-impact-of-smoking-and-sperm-health\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking and sperm health<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you can do if you think you\u2019re experiencing a \u201cmale period\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t blame your hormones for your mood changes, yet. However, if you\u2019re experiencing low sex drive, fatigue, or mood changes, there are some things you can do to get a diagnosis or improve your emotional wellbeing:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>See your primary care doctor (and maybe get a hormone test)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just because studies are inconclusive doesn\u2019t mean you don\u2019t need a big picture view of your health. Low (or high) testosterone levels could be a reason to check for other, co-occurring conditions. Your primary care doctor can also help you rule out thyroid issues, anemia, or other issues that may cause fatigue or mood changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Talk to a therapist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Men are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5734537\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly less likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to seek mental health care than women, thanks to outdated ideas about masculinity\u2014but thankfully that stigma is starting to change. If you are regularly or chronically experiencing low moods or mood swings, don\u2019t be afraid to find a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Test your sperm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/sperm-testing-guide\/\">Testing your sperm<\/a> gives you a plan for future family needs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points to other potential health issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Explore lifestyle changes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Exercise, healthier food, relieving stress\u2014all these things could help you get back on your game and build well-being.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take a break.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Burnout is real, and sometimes the best thing you can do is lean into the mood and give yourself some time off. But don\u2019t forget that one day off, or even a week of vacation, isn\u2019t necessarily enough to counter a stressful lifestyle.
