A minor curve in the penis does not necessarily indicate Peyronie\u2019s disease. This is especially true for those who\u2019ve had a curvature their whole life. When it comes to a bend or curve caused by Peyronie\u2019s disease vs. a normal curvature, the latter does not involve scar tissue and should not change over time. It is estimated that around <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17345-penile-curvature\">1% of people<\/a> of people with penises have normal, non-Peyronie\u2019s penile curvature.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does Peyronie\u2019s disease look like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologyhealth.org\/urology-a-z\/p\/peyronies-disease\">70% of cases<\/a>, the plaques form on the top of the penis, causing it to curve upwards when erect. Sometimes the plaques collect calcium and harden like bone. When plaques form on the bottom or side of the penis, the bend may point downward or sideways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs and symptoms of Peyronie\u2019s disease include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bent or curved penis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lumps or indentations in the penis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shorter or thinner penis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Painful erections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soft erections<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inability to get or maintain an erection (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/resources\/erectile-dysfunction-and-male-fertility\/\">erectile dysfunction<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Peyronie\u2019s disease is thought to be caused by repeated trauma to the penis, though some individuals cannot recall any trauma. Penile trauma may occur during sex, exercise, or as the result of an accident. During the healing process, scar tissue forms under the skin of the penis. This makes it difficult for the penis to stretch as it normally would with an erection. As blood flows to the penis, making it expand, the scar tissue causes the erection to curve as the skin tries to stretch. This can be painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/peyronies-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353468\">risk factors<\/a> that may increase the likelihood of developing Peyronie\u2019s disease. If a family member has the condition, your risk goes up. People with a history of connective tissue disorders or diseases of the prostate may also develop Peyronie\u2019s disease in the future. Prevalence also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/peyronies-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353468\">increases with age<\/a>, especially for men in their 50s and 60s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Hristina-Vlajinac\/publication\/7305483_Risk_factors_for_Peyronie%27s_disease_A_case-control_study\/links\/5e6f988c92851c6ba7088fef\/Risk-factors-for-Peyronies-disease-A-case-control-study.pdf\">case-control study<\/a> found that lifestyle habits, such as excessive alcohol consumption or smoking, may also play a part. They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Erectile dysfunction<\/strong>. Peyronie\u2019s disease may cause difficulty getting or maintaining an erection. (Some individuals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/peyronies-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353468\">report<\/a> experiencing erectile dysfunction before noticing symptoms of the disease. Therefore, it is unclear whether erectile dysfunction leads to Peyronie\u2019s disease or vice versa.) According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/peyronie-disease\">John Hopkins Medicine<\/a>, most patients with Peyronie\u2019s disease have normal penile rigidity during erections, though some have trouble maintaining erections due to leaky veins in the penis.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Painful sex<\/strong>. Peyronie\u2019s disease can cause pain to the person with the condition and\/or their sexual partner. The curve can also make it more difficult to enter the vagina.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anxiety or stress<\/strong>. Another complication associated with Peyronie\u2019s disease is mental stress. A Peyronie\u2019s patient may feel insecure about their sexual abilities or the appearance of their penis, which can affect your libido or the quality of their erections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relationship strain<\/strong>. Peyronie\u2019s disease can put strain on your relationship, especially if it is interfering with your ability to have sex or conceive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Peyronie\u2019s disease related to infertility?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Peyronie\u2019s disease does not directly cause infertility. However, it can make it more difficult to naturally conceive a child if it causes pain or erectile dysfunction. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279160\/\">Research<\/a> also shows that, while Peyronie\u2019s disease may not affect sperm count or quality, it may influence the \u201cadequacy or completeness of ejaculation\u201d \u2014 in other words, causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/resources\/low-semen-volume\/\">low semen volume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6606400\/\">studies<\/a> suggest men with Peyronie\u2019s disease have an increased risk of developing stomach cancer, testis cancer, and melanoma. Cancer radiation treatments and chemotherapy may reduce sperm count and quality, affecting your ability to conceive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips for trying to conceive with Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The medication collagenase clostridium histolyticum, known as Xiaflex, is the only FDA-approved medication for Peyronie\u2019s disease; it works by breaking down the buildup of collagen that causes penile curvature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early stages of the disease, doctors may recommend penile traction therapy, which involves stretching the penis with a mechanical device for a period of time to increase penile length and lessen the curvature. In one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1743609520309395\">study<\/a>, 95% of individuals treated for six months with traction therapy experienced length gains of around 2 cm, and 61% had curve improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in some cases, when treatments prove to be unsuccessful, surgery may be a better choice. This includes suturing the unaffected side of the penis or having a penile implant or penile pump surgically inserted into the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately from treating Peyronie\u2019s disease, your doctor may be able to treat your symptoms, especially if they are interfering with your ability to have sex. If the disease is causing erectile dysfunction, you may be prescribed oral medications like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/resources\/does-viagra-affect-fertility\/\">Viagra<\/a>, Levitra, or Cialis to help you get and maintain your erections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using assisted reproductive technology with Peyronie\u2019s disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of a Peyronie\u2019s disease diagnosis, if your sperm is healthy and viable, you should be able to conceive a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases when sex is difficult or painful, assisted reproductive technology (ART) like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/intrauterine-insemination-iui\/\">intrauterine insemination<\/a> (IUI) can be useful. This method involves placing sperm directly into your partner\u2019s uterus around the time of ovulation. <em>You can freeze sperm in advance with <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/sperm-freezing\/\"><em>Legacy\u2019s at-home sperm freezing kit<\/em><\/a><em> in case you\u2019re worried about producing a sample on the day of the procedure.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unable to get an erection to produce a sample, you might explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/testicular-sperm-extraction-tese\/\">testicular sperm extraction (TESE)<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/testicular-sperm-aspiration-tesa\/\">testicular sperm aspiration (TESA)<\/a>.
