Infertility is a diagnosis based on an outcome \u2014 a lack of pregnancy \u2014 as opposed to specific lab tests. However, diagnostic testing can help provide an explanation for what is causing or contributing to infertility. Typically, male fertility is evaluated by a semen analysis (SA), which highlights sperm motility, morphology, and concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is infertility?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Infertility is defined as the inability to acheive pregancy after twelve months of unprotected sex. Infertility is characterized as a \u201cfunctional diagnosis.\u201d In other words, infertility is based on an outcome (in this case, lack of pregnancy), rather than a collection of lab tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many different tests and examinations exist that can help diagnose the factors or causes contributing to infertility. For people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/testicles\/\">testes<\/a>, the first step is typically a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/semen-analysis-sa\/\">semen analysis (SA). <\/a>This test helps determine<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/motility\/\"> sperm motility (movement)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/morphology\/\">sperm morphology (shape\/structure)<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/sperm-concentration\/\">concentration (quantity)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In female patients, fertility declines significantly after the age of 35. As a result, patients over 35 may be diagnosed with infertility if they do not conceive after just six months of unprotected sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Infertility <strong>in males<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Male-factor infertility can be caused by a number of different factors, including poor sperm health, hormonal disorders, genetic disorders, or the disruption of the testicular or ejaculatory function, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/azoospermia\/\">azoospermia, <\/a>varicoceles, trauma to the testes, and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Though fertility is often thought of as a \u201cwomen\u2019s issue,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/male-factor-infertility\/\">male-factor infertility<\/a> is actually a contributor in around half of infertility cases.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of infertility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, infertility is defined by the inability to conceive after having unprotected sex for 6\u201312 months. But other signs of infertility can be observed, as well. Common warning signs for infertility in people with testes are swelling to the testicular area, problems with sexual function (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/retrograde-ejaculation\/\">retrograde ejaculation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/erectile-dysfunction-impotence\/\">erectile dysfunction<\/a>, etc.), and abnormal breast growth (also known as \u201cgynecomastia\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment of infertility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of different treatments available to couples struggling to conceive. The first step is consulting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/fertility-specialist\/\">fertility specialist <\/a>and diagnosing the issue. Couples with infertility can turn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/assisted-reproductive-technology-art\/\">assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures<\/a> to conceive, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/in-vitro-fertilization-ivf\/\">in vitro fertilization<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/fertility-glossary\/intrauterine-insemination-iui\/\">intrauterine insemination<\/a>.
